May 31st - Tooth #4

I can’t believe it’s already the last day in May!  Tuesday’s our busy day with school to swim team to gymnastics to dinner to bath to bedtime—so no hopes for going out with a bang.  But, this is definitely a big deal to Ella.  She lost her fourth tooth, another bottom one (her top two front teeth are a little wiggly, but she has yet to lose any top ones).  Ella could hardly wait to go to school today to show her teacher and friends.

May 29th - Just Having Fun

I’m just having some fun trying new things—I kind of see it as the purpose of ‘a picture a day in May’.

May 28th - SOOC

We had a great time at Discovery Place today.  One of our favorite parts is this dark hallway that has a row of wand-things that light up and make noise as you walk or run past them.  I wanted to take some pictures of the kids playing in this area, but, as I mentioned, it was dark, close to pitch black.  With my aperture wide open, I bumped my ISO all the way up to 6400 and still only got a shutter speed of 1/40 of a second.  Anyways, long story short, below are the results straight out of the camera (SOOC) and I think they turned out pretty cool.  :)

May 27th - Cancelled

Yes, Jack has been in his swim team bathing suit in 3 of the last 4 pictures of the day.  So is our life these days.  Jack puts his suit on a good 3 or 4 hours before swim team practice starts each day.  Needless to say, he loves his new suit and he loves swim team.  Today, however, this is how poor, sad Jack looked at the sound of thunder outside right as swim team practice was scheduled to start.

May 26th - Piano Practice

I was trying to imply motion here with a slow shutter speed, but, I guess when only one hand is playing between four keys, there really isn’t much motion at all.  Regardless, just wanted to note that Ella has been pretty good about practicing her assigned songs and doing her piano homework.  Love it.

{ella went to a “spa” birthday party over the weekend and got her fingernails and toenails painted red.}

May 25th - Pool Party!

After school today we headed straight to a birthday party for sweet little Stellyn who is now 2 years old.  Her party couldn’t have been in a more beautiful/awesome/fun setting—her own backyard.  Pool, playset, putting green, and, of course, great friends.  I only took a few pictures, but you can tell everyone had a good time.  Happy Birthday, Stellyn!

May 24th - A Shrimper

Swim team is in full swing again and this year Ella has moved up to the 8 & Under group and our boy Jack is a shrimper.  Jack seemed a little hesitant at first about doing swim team at all, then he moved on to having me assure him that he only had to swim one length of the pool at swim meets and then he was done, and now, since day 1 of swim practice, he’s gung ho about swim team and can hardly wait to start practice.  And today Jack got fitted for his new swim team suit.  Once he got that suit on (or at least, the one that fit him—he had to try on a few) he did not want to take it off.  He wore it for swim practice this afternoon, he wore it to drop Ella off at gymnastics, he wore it to the food store, he wore it through dinner, and he proudly wore it to show off when Jonathan got home from work.  I have to say, I think Jack in his little racing trunks is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.  Never been a fan of the skin tight suits for boys, but Jack is just so dang cute it’s fine by me if he wears it every day…and, come to think of it, Jonathan looked pretty good in his tri suit, too.  :)

{cell phone pic, but you’ll surely be seeing more of this in better pictures.}

May 23rd - Happy Birthday, Griffin!

It’s hard to believe it, but the Browns’ youngest son turned 4 today.  My how time flies.  Jack and I were happy to help him celebrate this afternoon.  Happy Birthday, Griffin!

{everyone was mesmerized by the super cool batman cake…and hot and sweaty from having tons of fun playing outside.}

{apparently the “windows” and “bats” were the best part. :) }

May 22nd - Jack's Latest Obsession

And no, none of us have seen the new movie but I guess with the recent onslaught of Pirates of the Caribbean mania—LEGO building sets, movie trailers, and Jack Sparrow’s picture just about everywhere—Jack’s interest in pirates has been renewed.  He’s been dressed like this most of the weekend and the eternal debate around here has been who gets to be Elizabeth Swann, me or Ella.

May 21st - Working Girl

I’m a little late on posting my picture for the day, but I have a pretty good excuse.  I was in the North Carolina mountains assisting the very talented photographer (and my good friend) Brooke Brown shoot her first, of I’m sure many, wedding.  I admittedly have not looked through all of my photos yet but wanted to post one (with just some quick edits) for my May 21st picture.  Congratulations, Joni and Mike!  You are a lovely couple and we thank you dearly for letting us be a part of your day.

{this was taken at the heart song labyrinth of the terranova center in cedar mountain, where the wedding took place.  it was a lovely setting.}

Brooke and I were exhausted but kind of on a high at the end of the day.

May 20th - Jack Is 6! (Well Almost)

Jack’s TK class celebrated Summer birthdays today for seven kids in his class.  The other half of the class had a birthday celebration in the Fall, because that’s how it goes in TK—there’s a drought of birthdays between December and April.  Anyways, each kid had decorated a fishing cupcake with blue icing, a pretzel stick fishing rod, and gummy fish and each birthday kid got to make a wish and blow out a candle.  It’s good practice for Jack’s real 6th birthday in, oh, about 2 1/2 months.

May 19th - A Brownie

Ella had her Girl Scouts ceremony to bridge from a Daisy to a Brownie today.  This is the last time you’ll see her in Girl Scout blue.

{reciting the girl scout creed.}

{receiving her daisy/brownie corsage—it was a yellow daisy with a brown center.}

{crossing the “bridge”.}

{receiving her new patches for her brownie vest for next year.}

A Sweet Reprise

Because I’m having Emilee withdrawal (it’s been a month since we’ve seen her) and because by now all of the announcements have probably arrived by mail so I’m not ruining any surprises, I wanted to post images of the baby announcement I created with Chrissy and Chris for my sweet new niece.  I have my announcement up on my fridge and love looking up at that perfect little lovely face each day.

I also wanted to post a little slideshow I put together of my favorite shots from our little photo session with Emilee, for no other reason than to let me easily watch it over and over again.  I’m sure she’s changed so much in the last month—I hope we get a chance to visit her and our nephews (aren’t they cuties) again soon.

May 18th - Photo Booth

I actually did not take a single picture today.  Knowing what we probably had in store for the day, I kind of figured the best pictures would not come from me and my camera anyways (so I took the day off).  One of my professional photographer friends, Dao, borrowed some backdrop and lighting equipment and set up a sort of “photo booth” in her house just to try it out.  Photographers are marketing these “crazy booth” things (which actually aren’t booths at all) to engaged couples as a way to get fun pictures of the wedding guests at the reception.  If you check out just about any wedding photographer’s blog nowadays you’ll see examples of how, with the right props, you certainly will get some of the most memorable shots of your wedding.  Anyways, we went over to Dao’s house today and Ella and Jack had a ton of fun trying on all of the hats, masks, and beads and posing for Dao with her adorable son Jacob as she took pictures against the backdrop.  I love the results.

Strawberry Patch

Ella, Jack, and I spent a lovely evening last week picking strawberries at Hall Family Farm.  Ella’s kindergarten class went on a field trip last year to this farm and, it was such a fun outing, we decided we needed our own trip this year.  It’s funny how the kids’ personalities really come out in activities like this—Ella dove right in and practically filled her entire basket full of strawberries (she still did a great job picking ripe, red ones), while Jack was a more careful and deliberate strawberry picker and I literally dumped the strawberries from his basket into Ella’s to just top it off when we were set to check out.  Going on a weekday evening, we pretty much had the fields to ourselves and we all had fun going from row to row to find the very best berries out there.  We had such a nice time and came home with tons of yummy strawberries.

{ella so kindly pointing out to jack that he had picked a strawberry with a white tip, instead of fully red and ripe…  after strawberry picking, the kids tried their hand at the ‘berry amazing maze’.  once they figured it out, i had to time them as they went through the maze over and over and over again.  ella eventually got it down to 20 seconds.}

{on the right: the first time ella successfully made it out of the maze.}

{and jack wasn’t far behind.}

{and then over again.  and again. and again. and again… :) }
