May 31 – Off to School

I noticed that most of the pictures this month were from after school, so I decided to wrap up the month of pictures with one from our busy morning before school.  After today, only 6 more days of walking to the bus stop as a kindergartener and 2nd grader.  But man, these kids already look to me so much older to me in this picture…

{ella’s sense of style has really come out lately.  the girl loves a great maxi dress, but her go-to style is definitely sporty chic.  jack’s just sporty.  it’s all about the soccer clothes.}

May 30 – Bedtime

It has been pretty easy—even with everything we have to get done between swim practice and lights out—to get these kids to bed on time this past week after all of this swimming they’re doing each evening.  It’s still light outside at bedtime.

{gah, this face is so beautiful.}

May 29 – Dinner of Champions

…swim champions, that is.  With swim team practice leaving us only about an hour and a half to get dinner, homework, showers, etc., etc., done each night, the dinner’s have to be pretty simple and quick.  Jonathan wasn’t home for dinner so we had a favorite of the kids which is—believe it or not—smoked salmon on a bagel.  Ella and Jack love, love, love, salmon any way they can get it.  One afternoon there was actually crying from one kid because the other had finished off the rest of the smoked salmon.  Honestly, I don’t get it either.  I wouldn’t touch fish, especially salmon, as kid with a ten-foot pole.  But, I’m certainly glad these two like it so much.

May 28 – Our Day

Nine more days of school left, but we were livin’ it up today like it’s already summer.

{some pool time…}

{some baseball…we actually played some catch yesterday evening, too, after taking the kids to see the lorax. when jonathan was kissing jack good night at bedtime he asked jack if he liked the movie.  jack said, “yeah, but i liked playing baseball with you more.”}

{and our first watermelon of the year…}

{jack’s attempt to not drip on his shirt while eating the watermelon.}

May 27 – The Tree

Back at one of our favorite spots for dinner with the infamous climbing tree behind it.  Ella was wearing the same outfit when I captured a picture of her in this tree nearly two years ago.  This time, however, the little boy with her in the tree was Jack instead of Miles.  Also, my iPhone had to do this time instead of the big camera…

May 26 – More Jack

He swims, he writes, and, yes, he even reads some chapter books…it’s the amazing Jack!  That makes three days in a row of Jack—he’s such a cutie.  We’ll try to capture the lovely Ella tomorrow.

May 25 – Workshop

I feel very fortunate that I have the opportunity to volunteer at the kids’ school quite a bit.  Most of that volunteer work is behind the scenes, either for the PTA or Ella’s and Jack’s teachers.  I absolutely love it, though, when I get the chance to help the teachers in the classroom, seeing my own kids and getting to know their classmates.  With Ella in 2nd grade this year, I was seldom with the kids unless there was a special event with all of the parents.  I never went on one of her field trips and I think I only got to help with one workshop her class had.  I had to make up for it with meeting Ella for lunch at least once a month.  Kindergarten, on the other hand, rocks when it comes to parent helpers.  I was in Jack’s class several times for special events that required parent volunteers, I chaperoned one field trip, and I volunteered as a workshop helper every other Friday (on top of eating lunch with him, too, at least once a month).  Today was my last afternoon in Jack’s class and I was admittedly kind of sad to think about kindergarten coming to an end here shortly.  We’ll have two “graders” soon.  *sniff sniff*  Hopefully I’ll be fortunate enough to be at the school—and in the classrooms—again next year, too.

{such a good kid and a good student.  jack had a substitute teacher today and even she was telling me what a nice, polite, well-behaved kid jack is.  that’s always so wonderful to hear.  (i’m beaming with pride lately because the moms who chaperoned ella’s girl scout encampment last weekend said the same thing about ella…now if ella and jack could just be civil to each other…)}

May 24 – And So It Begins

The first swim team practice of the season was this evening, the first of many evenings between now and July spent poolside.  The kids have either practice or a meet every weeknight for the next 5 weeks and boy are they excited.

May 23 – Orthodontist

Ella had a regularly-scheduled orthodontist appointment this morning (as opposed to the 3 times we’ve been to have a wire fixed because she likes to pick at it…).  Ella loves these appointments because it means she gets to choose new rubber band colors.  We went from all one color (blue) to two alternating colors (orange and pink) to now three colors (blue, green, and purple).

May 22 – Playing Outside

These days, when the weather is nice, once the kids complete their homework for the night they are out the door to play with their neighborhood friends in the cul-de-sac.  Usually they are on their scooters, riding skateboards down sloped driveways, playing soccer, or on someone’s swingset.  But, today for Ella and her friend Julie, it was all about the Barbies.

{this is jack all dejected because his friend had to go inside and no other boys were outside…}

May 21 – Gator

OK, so I got the end of the day, after bedtime, and realized I hadn’t taken a picture today.  Gator was the only willing model.  But, honestly, today—even more than usual—we’ve been thinking about how much we appreciate this pup and wish his time with us wouldn’t be so limited…

May 20 – Brixx

Another job that has been keeping me busy this year has been a few photo shoots for the restaurant Brixx Wood-Fired Pizza.  I’ve photographed hands preparing food, kids’ menu items, pizzas, appetizers, sandwiches, and wraps.  It has been fun venturing into food photography and it has also been fun to reap the rewards of payment in pizza.  I have several gift cards to Brixx, our favorite family restaurant—as a sidenote, I actually finished our 2010 blog book recently (another distraction from the blog) and, in doing so, noticed that we mentioned Brixx as the kids’ favorite place at least FIVE TIMES in blog posts.  They love this place, as do Jonathan and I, but it’s funny to me that all it takes is the buttery noodles with freshly-grated parmesan and foccaccia on the side to win them over.  Even if I tried to make this at home, it’s always so much better at Brixx.

{dining al fresco.  it was a gorgeous day.  ella was definitely tired after her night away with the girl scouts (uh, can you tell, or what??).  it was to bed early for both of these two tonight.}

May 19 – Only Child

Jack had his parents to himself today with Ella away on a Girl Scouts camping trip.  (After dropping Ella off bright and early) we all slept in, had a pancake breakfast together and then Jonathan took Jack for a matinee to see The Avengers.  We finished the night at our third 40th birthday party of the year, a family event at Mac’s Speed Shop, a “beer, bikes, BBQ” place with live music.  Jack kind of relished his day as an only child.  Only pictures of the day of us (I missed the movie to photograph a Junior League event)—coming home from dinner in daddy’s car because it only has a seat for one kid.

{tired.                                                                                     posing for the camera.}

May 18 - A Note for Ella

Ella's going on a Girl Scouts "encampment" trip tomorrow, leaving at the crack of dawn and returning on Sunday. Jonathan wrote a sweet note (which he wouldn't let me photograph directly for the blog--might be more out of annoyance for how much I've been enjoying my iPhone than anything else) to slip into her pillowcase to find while she's away tomorrow night. We'll surely miss her but know she'll have a great time. Created with PhotoShake

May 17 – Ella Enchanted

It has been a long, long while since the tiaras and princess clothes have come out of the dress-up trunks.  For whatever reason, Ella went straight for them this afternoon after school.

{maybe this new interest was sparked by that big book she was reading a week or so ago—it was one in the ella enchanted series.  this is her “princess pose” a la ella.}

May 16 – Cursive

Ella was very excited when she came home today—we didn’t even make it home from the bus stop before she showed me her paper—about cursive practice she did at school today.  She’s been signing her name in “cursive” for months, if not years, so to say that Ella’s thrilled to finally learn all of her cursive letters is an understatement.

{i asked ella why they were writing the word ‘café’—it just seemed like an odd choice to me.  apparently, they only made it to the letter ‘f’ so all the practice words could only contain ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’, ‘d’, ‘e’, or ‘f’.  makes sense…}

May 15 – Stay Still

And this is Jack’s idea of staying still when I tell him I need him to not move so I can take a close picture of his eyes…

and just my favorite still…love this face…

May 14 – Rain

It rained most of the day and then, late this afternoon when the sun finally came out, there were water droplets settling on a lot of the plants.  The water on our vegetable garden plants, particularly our corn (yes, corn, it’s an experiment—we’ve also got tomatoes, jalepeños, squash, and zucchini), was in cool little round droplets.

{ok, well that’s a forsythia, but i just loved the sparkling sunlight in the drops.}

May 13 – Mother’s Day

We’ve been blessed with many wonderful mothers in our lives—grandmothers, aunts, great grandmothers, godmothers, friends—a very happy Mother’s Day to each and every one of them!

{we forgot to take a picture of me and my cuties when we looked really nice after church today—this is after being out in the rain for a while.  i love it either way.  thanks for a special mother’s day, jack, ella, and jonathan.}

May 11 – Friday Night

So, trying to photograph jumping kids on a trampoline at night is apparently hard.  I was having too much fun to be bothered with taking pictures any earlier.  We hung out at our friends the Browns’ house tonight.  Enjoying their amazing patio, good beer leftover from Mike’s birthday party, new trampoline (both kids and adults), and, of course, the greatest of company.  Unfortunately, photo wise, it doesn’t get any better than this…

May 10 – Soccer Trophy

Add it to the shelf.  Jack had another great soccer season and looks forward to many more.

May 9 – Homework

Jack’s homework tonight was to play with mixing colors (we chose to do this with watercolors) and then write about his findings.  His favorite color to mix up was teal (just a little green and blue).  He has to complete three homework assignments a week from a list of a month’s worth of tasks.  Usually his homework involves reading a story and then writing something about the story, so this was kind of a fun homework night for Jack.

{this adorable kid is going to need a longer post soon on all of his cute quirkiness.  love this boy.  (on right) he came home from school today all proud of the puppy he had made for me out of scrap paper.  it said “i love you” down one side of it."}

May 8 – Home Sick

Ella was sent home from school almost immediately after arriving today because she has a rash covering almost her entire body (face excluded and most noticeably on her legs).  She took Benadryl last night because it was itchy and keeping her awake, but I didn’t think it was a good idea to send her to school doped up on Benadryl.  So instead I sent her to school itchy and uncomfortable and just told her not to scratch it.  I guess that makes me mother of the year in the school’s eyes because Ella remarked to a few specials teachers on her way down the hall from the bus just how uncomfortable she was, so they escorted her directly to the nurse’s office.  She never even made it to her classroom.  So, this prompted a doctor’s visit today to see if this rash was actually something I should be worried about.  Basically, without a fever or any cold/flu-like symptoms we have to assume this is a rash due to some environmental irritant she was exposed to and therefore we’ll just have to wait out the two weeks it might take to clear up.  So, plan of attack, Benadryl at night, Claritin might help during the day, and don’t scratch it.  I guess we got some peace of mind, but I still think I didn’t need to keep her home today…kind of feel we’re right back where we started.

{ella finally finished her big, fat book, so spent some q.t. with the new favorite toy around here, my iphone.}

May 7 – The Piano

I think we’re finally getting somewhere in motivating Ella to practice every day, but she has still come a long way with her piano playing in this first year of lessons.  Don’t get me wrong, Ella does enjoy piano very much, she just tends to get distracted and busy after school with homework and playing and then runs out of time.  This past week, though, she’s really stepped it up with her practicing so I’m hoping the piano can finally be one less thing I have to nag about…

My Birthday Week

My birthday was on a Monday this year and Jonathan left on a work trip bright and early at 5am that day, to be gone the entire week.  We did celebrate Sunday with a treat after church of my choice (Yoforia), presents and a card, and a family dinner out on Sunday—so there was plenty of hoopla for this (non-milestone) birthday.  But, knowing Jonathan was out of town, and being the awesome friends that they are, all of my besties went out of their way the whole week to make me feel special.  Carolyn and Janet saved me a seat at the school’s quarter-end awards assembly (front row, which I NEVER get) and then took me out to lunch on Monday (my actual birthday), Brooke and Carolyn took me for pedicures and lunch on Tuesday, Ivy (Baden’s mom) took me out for lunch after we worked out together on Wednesday, and Dao took me out for breakfast on Friday (on Thursday I spent a lot of the school day with Jack’s class for a Parents’ Day performance or I might’ve had other plans that day, too—don’t I have awesome friends?!).  I also got some really great gifts in there, too.  (I hope I’m not forgetting anyone.)  I did miss Jonathan, but I definitely had a great week.

{front row at the 3rd quarter-end awards assembly—next year i’m sure i’ll always be there as I’ll have to go to the early one (for 3rd-5th) and the later one (for k-2nd).}

{my friends weren’t the only great ones on my birthday.  ella and jack were super-sweet, showering me with cards, drawings, and “happy birthday”’s.  they also took me out to dinner for thai food.  yum.}

{this picture and some of the next few are from a school camera (i got a hold of them because i did the year-end slideshow for the class) from parents’ day with jack’s class.  i went to ‘muffins with moms’ with jack, watched the show in the auditorium where the kids performed a few songs about moms and dads and what a wonderful world, and then—because jonathan was still out of town—went to ‘dribbling with dads’ with jack to play soccer with him out on the school fields.  jack definitely enjoyed playing soccer the most so i’m kind of glad i got to enjoy that part with him.}

{from my camera—my view of the show.  jack is in the second row, middle, in a turquoise shirt.}

{and then, the end of the week, waffle breakfast with dao.  the only candle i blew out for this birthday.  many thanks to all of my incredible friends and family for another special birthday!}

May 6 – Ella the Bookworm

Just had to highlight Ella today, too.  She’s become quite the bookworm lately, taking on some pretty big books.  This one comes in at a whopping 326 pages.

May 6 – Golf

Inspired by watching some of the Quail Hollow Golf Tournament which is taking place in our beautiful city this week, Jack decided to haul his set of golf clubs out the backyard to play a little today.  It’s usually soccer we’re playing out back, so he really hasn’t practiced his swing much.  I’m impressed, though, with how well his kept his head down instead of following the ball—I guess he does listen to me, sometimes.
