On our second day in Charleston we crossed the Cooper River bridge to head over to Patriots’ Point. There we explored the Naval aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, Naval destroyer USS Laffey (where we actually saw a few veterans who were once on the crew), and the submarine USS Clamagore. We all found our tours of these ships very interesting and the idea of living on one surreal.
After Patriots’ Point, we head to Shem Creek for lunch and then a walk by the marina on the boardwalks. From the end of the boardwalks you could get a closer view of Fort Sumter—we hope to make the ferry ride on our next trip to Charleston when perhaps it’s not quite so windy or threatening rain all day. We fortunately didn’t get rained on during our adventures at Patriots’ Point or Shem Creek, but that night we had to make a run for it to a restaurant for dinner in a torrential downpour. Luckily, we were staying in the historic district and close to many great restaurants.
{check out jonathan’s swagger.}
{aboard the uss yorktown. it was fun for me to be near military jets again, although none were air force.}
{on the bridge of the uss yorktown.}
{ready to climb down into the submarine, the uss clamagore. we couldn’t believe that 60 men could live aboard, some sleeping with the torpedoes.}
{it was obviously a very windy day. :) }
